Another New Year is a little over a month away. It’s always a time for people to take part in some self-reflection where they examine all aspects of their lives and strive to do better. That can be from modifying their work habits to spending more time with their children or significant other. They may pledge to go to the gym more often. There is another group of people who should be jotting down resolutions – you doctors and other people in the health field.
You as the health or medical practitioner can help guide patients with their resolutions. Sometimes they merely need some additional nudging or clarification of what they can do to achieve those goals. Generally, it’s nudging… not anything that can be construed as being overbearing, since that often gets the opposite result: inaction.
The first thing you, as a doctor or medical/health professional, should do is speak with the patient/potential patient about what they envision as being a successful year. Be firm and upfront about what you plan to do. Patients, on the whole, like it when doctors treat them like real people and not just problems that are to be solved and then discarded soon thereafter. You should explain that you are there
to help them be as healthy as possible so they can live happy lives, as well as support their resolution to follow through.
Secondly, you can take advantage of health fairs so that you can effectively network and lay out your visions for January and the months that follow. Explain some basic goals that they could aim for. There is no better opportunity than to be able to see these people and show them your expertise and win them over with your personality as well. It’s not just health fairs, though – you can go to events like Lunch and Learn and display your knowledge there. Group settings like that can be perfect to be able to distribute your literature or business cards… and again, explain some basic things they can do to get them moving toward a healthy upcoming year. .
